As a traditional top Direct Subsidy Scheme (DSS) elite school, Diocesan Boys' School (DBS) has always attracted a large number of parents submitting applications for their sons. In addition to outstanding achievements in sports, arts and academics, the school recently plans to offer the International Advanced Level (IAL) curriculum, moving towards a "three-track" system. DBS's G7 (Form 1) admission applications for the 2027/28 academic year will officially open on 17 October 2026. After deducting places for students promoted directly from the affiliated primary school, the school expects to offer about 100 places for external students through open recruitment.
📋 Application Details: Forms Distributed and Returned from 17 October
The total number of Form 1 places at DBS is about 240 to 250, of which about 150 are reserved for graduates of the "through-train" Diocesan Boys' School Primary Division, leaving about 100 places for external students to compete for. The dates for distributing and returning application forms are from 17 October 2026 (Saturday) to 17 November 2026 (Tuesday). Parents may download the form from the school website, or send a stamped A4 self-addressed envelope (with a $5.6 stamp and marked "Request for Form 1 (Grade 7) Application Form") by post to the school to request it.
🗣️ Admission Talks on 17 October; Tickets Available by Post
The school will hold two Cantonese admission talks on 17 October 2026, and the talk videos will also be uploaded to the school's official website after the event. The first admission talk is for parents of Diocesan Preparatory School and designated non-affiliated primary schools, from 9:30 a.m. to 10:30 a.m. Admission tickets will be sent directly to the designated primary schools, and parents may enquire and obtain them from their child's current primary school. The second admission talk is for members of the public and parents of other primary schools, from 11:30 a.m. to 12:30 p.m. Parents must send a self-addressed envelope with a $2.4 stamp to the school on or before 9 October 2026 (marked on the envelope "Request for Form 1 (G7) Admission Talk Ticket"). Tickets are distributed on a first-come, first-served basis.
📊 Selection Criteria and Weighting for New Students
The selection committee will rigorously assess applicants according to school-based standards, with the following weightings: academic results 60%, extracurricular activities 20%, interview performance 15%, and other factors 5% (for example, father or brother being an old boy of the school, or a brother currently studying at the school). Selected applicants will be required to attend Chinese and English interviews; those with special talent in music or sports will be invited to attend specialised tests. Admission results are expected to be announced in late March or early April 2027, and successful applicants must sign an undertaking to withdraw from the Education Bureau's Secondary School Places Allocation System.
💡 Interview Tips: Mental Arithmetic and Current Affairs Questions
According to past student experience, the DBS interview lasts about half an hour, conducted separately by Chinese and English (native-speaking) teachers, focusing on testing students' Chinese and English proficiency, mental arithmetic in mathematics and science, and on-the-spot reactions. There is also a Chinese and English conversation to understand daily life and reading habits. For the Chinese interview, candidates may answer in Cantonese or Putonghua. In the preparation room, there are 3 to 4 minutes to read a 200 to 300-word passage, and pronunciation, intonation, confidence and phrasing are assessed during reading aloud. For the English and Mathematics interview, candidates must complete 20 English mathematics questions (including fractions, time and logic word problems) by mental arithmetic within 4 minutes. Common question types include daily life questions (such as "Who does the housework at home?"), reading questions (such as "What book have you read recently?"), and current affairs questions (testing basic awareness).
The school's admission focus includes excellent conduct and academic performance, natural sincerity, childlike innocence and enthusiasm, and it will also consider the primary school and family education atmosphere, but ultimately student performance remains the main factor. Preparation tips include reading short passages aloud every day, encouraging children to describe daily life in natural language, cultivating Chinese and English reading habits, understanding basic current affairs information, and avoiding over-practice so that children can show their true selves.
💰 Annual Fee Overview: Fee Remission and Scholarships Available
DBS school fees are paid in instalments (10 instalments for the DSE curriculum, 7 to 8 instalments for senior IB). The latest fee reference is as follows (fees are subject to final approval by the Education Bureau):

(C) IB Programme (G11-G12): $151,180.
To ensure that students are not denied admission due to financial factors, the school has a "Fee Remission Scheme" (families receiving Comprehensive Social Security Assistance may receive full remission), an Education Fund and various scholarships.
