Institutions have been actively promoting industry-academia-research collaboration in recent years, and music is no exception. To discover more Asian student musicians, the University of Hong Kong (HKU) Faculty of Arts has announced a strategic partnership with the Pan-Asian Music and Artist Management Group (PMG), jointly launching a new record label that will provide funding for song production and other services. In the first phase, the new label will release EP compilations every quarter, inviting student musicians to compose, write lyrics and produce music on designated themes.
🎓 MEPoP Programme: Asia's First Deep Integration of Academia and Practice
The HKU Faculty of Arts launched the "Music Entrepreneurship and Pop Practice" (MEPoP) programme in 2025, the first institution in Asia to deeply integrate academia and practice. MEPoP announced yesterday that it has reached a strategic partnership with PMG to jointly establish the record label "M Records," discovering and supporting student musicians from across Asia, providing them with funding, resources and tools to help them develop their music careers. In its first phase, "M Records" will launch a themed EP compilation project, releasing one EP every quarter featuring student works from across Asia. The label will announce a specific academic theme each quarter, inviting student musicians to create lyrics, music and produce tracks.
💰 Label Provides Song Production Funding and Distribution and Marketing Services
The Faculty of Arts stated that "M Records" will provide student musicians with creative and commercial support, including song production funding, music distribution and marketing services, as well as opportunities to exchange with industry professionals and seek guidance and support. Wong Yue-ching, Co-Director of MEPoP and Assistant Professor in HKU's Department of Music, said that PMG is committed to discovering artists across Asia, and this collaboration will leverage its professional team, industry networks and expertise to help student musicians realise their musical dreams and career aspirations.
💬 PMG: Helping Student Music Reach a Wider Audience
PMG CEO Jonathan Serbin said that nowadays it has become very easy for musicians to upload songs, but most students still lack sufficient resources, tools and professional guidance to allow their music to reach a wider audience. He hopes this collaboration will jointly discover and nurture emerging music talent.
