In addition to publishing a book to commemorate the 100th anniversary of its founding, Munsang College also specially brought together the strength of its secondary school, primary school, kindergarten and Munsang College (Hong Kong Island) to produce an original English musical, PHILO・SOPHIA, which was officially staged earlier at the Xiqu Centre. The entire production took two years to prepare and mobilised more than 800 students, teachers and alumni to participate, using drama, music, dance and theatre technology to tell the hundred-year story of Munsang College. Principal Yip Chi-siu frankly said, "We hope that through this original musical, the audience will be brought to deep reflection, exploring the true meaning of the existence of schools and education in the age of artificial intelligence (AI)."
🎬 Plot Summary: The Intertwining of 2026 and 2126
PHILO・SOPHIA tells the story of Philo in 2026 and Sophia in 2126. The male protagonist, Philo, questions whether traditional schools have lost their value since AI can already answer all questions; while the female protagonist, Sophia, living in the fictional year 2126 with an AI chip implanted in her brain, leads a flawless life yet feels lost. Across the intertwining of time and space, Sophia travels back to 2026 and re-experiences campus life.
🎼 Professional Team Directs; Primary, Secondary and Kindergarten Students Perform Together
The school specially invited local veteran theatre director Yip Shun-him, who had collaborated on the 85th anniversary celebration, to serve as Artistic Director, and invited artiste Chak Hoi-tai (Tyson) to direct. In addition to primary, secondary and kindergarten students performing together, the entire performance also featured live accompaniment by the school orchestra. Yip Chi-siu added, "Students performing on a professional stage fully demonstrates their artistic accomplishment." He continued that this is a work that places equal emphasis on looking back and looking forward, containing profound reflection. "Artificial intelligence is just a tool that can accelerate our access to information; but to give play to these abilities and enjoy the fun within, interaction, emotional exchange and creativity between people are ultimately needed — and this is precisely the most important element that AI cannot replace."
👶 Most Touching Scene: The Innocent Singing of Kindergarten Children
Speaking of the scene in the musical that moved him most, Yip Chi-siu said it fell on the youngest performers. "My favourite scene is when the female protagonist travels to 2026, meets the male protagonist, and then watches the kindergarten children perform." The children, with innocent and pure voices, sing meaningful lyrics such as "I want to climb up to the moon, I want you to be proud of me," as if telling of their dreams for learning, forming a strong contrast with the cold and precise AI era.
💡 Yip Chi-siu: Every Era Has Its Own Fight
Yip Chi-siu stressed, "The musical brings out an important message: 'Every time has its own fight.'" He continued, "We cannot predict the future, and we cannot solve tomorrow's problems today; instead, we should use the wisdom and methods accumulated from the past to respond to present problems. Education is precisely such a continuous process."
