The Hong Kong Polytechnic University (PolyU) and Citybus Limited have signed a Memorandum of Understanding (MoU). Citybus will use the "Intelligent Driving Training and Assessment System," developed by PolyU with funding from the Smart Traffic Fund, as an auxiliary tool for bus captain training. The system is based on a container truck driving simulation platform and incorporates extended reality (XR) technology to provide captains with a simulated driving training experience, helping to enhance training effectiveness and safety awareness.

Signing Ceremony Held at PolyU Campus
The signing ceremony was held earlier at the PolyU campus. Witnessed by Professor Fu Xiaowen, Head of the Department of Industrial and Systems Engineering and Chair Professor of Logistics Engineering at PolyU, and Ms. Chen Wanting, Managing Director of Citybus, the MoU was signed by Dr. Tang Yuming, Senior Lecturer of the Department of Industrial and Systems Engineering at PolyU, and Mr. Wong Wai-yip, General Manager (Talent Management and Culture) of Citybus, on behalf of both parties.

System Combines XR and AI Analysis to Simulate Sudden Road Conditions
The "Intelligent Driving Training and Assessment System" adopted in this collaboration was developed by PolyU's Department of Industrial and Systems Engineering. The system integrates XR technology, artificial intelligence analysis, and a "six degrees of freedom" dynamic simulation platform. It can simulate various road scenarios, such as pedestrians suddenly crossing the road and adverse weather conditions, and uses data recording to help analyse captains' driving performance and their responses to sudden situations. In the first phase of the collaboration, the completed container truck driving simulation platform will be used as a basis to pilot auxiliary training for Citybus captains. PolyU will evaluate and optimise the simulation content according to actual training needs to make it more closely resemble the daily driving conditions of buses. If the pilot proves effective, both parties will explore further optimising the simulation system or transforming it into a simulation platform tailored to bus operating characteristics.

Fu Xiaowen: Repeated Practice in a Zero-Risk Environment to Build Muscle Memory
Professor Fu Xiaowen said that PolyU has always been committed to translating research outcomes into practical applications. The intelligent driving simulation system completed with funding from the Smart Traffic Fund aims to break through the scene and technical limitations of traditional driving training, using simulation technology to provide learners with personalised and targeted training. By analysing learners' performance, the system offers targeted suggestions and allows learners to repeatedly practise high-risk, low-frequency sudden road scenarios in a zero-risk simulated environment, reinforcing emergency responses and building muscle memory, thereby greatly enhancing their ability to respond on real roads. He hopes that the in-depth collaboration with Citybus will help translate the university's research outcomes into practical applications and support the upgrading of talent training in the bus industry.

Chen Wanting: Technology Enhances Training for Flexible Response to a Rapidly Changing Traffic Environment
Ms. Chen Wanting said that Citybus serves more than a million passengers daily and always places driving safety first. The company keeps pace with the times and actively uses innovative technology to enhance professional talent development and training, enabling flexible responses to a rapidly changing traffic environment. She is pleased to collaborate with PolyU on the pilot scheme, allowing captains to practise different driving scenarios in a simulated environment as a supplement to actual on-road training, enhancing their responsiveness in a safe environment. Citybus will continue to make good use of technology to raise safety standards, incorporating smart elements into areas ranging from talent training and learning development to fleet operations and management, and is committed to providing safer and more reliable bus services for Hong Kong.

Pilot Scheme Launched in July; Joint Data Analysis to Evaluate Effectiveness
The intelligent driving training pilot scheme was officially launched in July. Citybus has arranged for some serving captains to participate in simulated driving training. Afterwards, the PolyU and Citybus teams will jointly analyse the training data to evaluate its effectiveness. Both parties hope that through practical application experience, they can provide a reference for future bus training models and continuously raise the level of public transport safety in Hong Kong.
