City University of Hong Kong (CityU) held the President's Awards for Excellence in Research presentation ceremony to commend 5 outstanding scholars, recognising their exceptional achievements in their respective fields and their breakthrough impact. Among them, Chair Professor Huang Yihui of the Department of Media and Communication won an award the year before last for research in the field of "trust"; the team of Yu Xinge from the Department of Biomedical Engineering earlier developed bionic skin with a sense of pain.
🔬 Excellence in Research Awards: Huang Yihui and Yu Xinge Honoured
The awards include the Award for Excellence in Research and the Award for Excellence in Research (Young Faculty). The former was won by Huang Yihui and Yu Xinge. Huang Yihui was awarded the Research Grants Council Senior Research Fellow award the year before last, recognising her pioneering research in the field of "trust." She is currently conducting a five-year study combining quantitative and qualitative research and large language models to construct and measure a dynamic model of contextual trust. As for Yu Xinge, his research integrates technology with traditional healthcare, using innovative technology to develop wearable products that monitor patients' health. His team has made repeated breakthroughs in electronic skin research in recent years, most recently developing bionic skin with a sense of pain that can produce autonomic nerve reflexes.
🧬 Excellence in Research Awards (Young Faculty): Zheng Zongli, Hou Junhui and Ye Ruquan
The recipients of the Award for Excellence in Research (Young Faculty) include Zheng Zongli of the Department of Biomedical Sciences, Hou Junhui of the Department of Computer Science, and Ye Ruquan of the Department of Chemistry. Zheng Zongli is committed to developing revolutionary genome editing drugs that directly perform "surgery" on DNA to eradicate the root cause of disease; last year he received funding from the "Research, Academic and Industry Sectors One-plus Scheme" to develop two candidate drugs, and is currently preparing to begin clinical trials. Hou Junhui focuses on neural spatial computing, promoting deep integration of the digital and physical worlds and facilitating intelligent decision-making through developing innovative computational models and efficient learning frameworks. Ye Ruquan has in recent years been committed to converting carbon dioxide into chemicals and fuels, using solar and electrical energy to produce green hydrogen, and enhancing energy conversion efficiency and reducing manufacturing costs through microenvironment engineering and other means.
💬 Lee Chun-sing: Contributions Go Beyond the Laboratory to Become Practical Applications
CityU Acting President Lee Chun-sing said the award-winning scholars stood out through world-class academic papers, competitive research funding, patents and honours, and their contributions go beyond the laboratory and academic literature, translating into practical applications that benefit industry development and the general public. Vice-President (Research) Leung Mei-yee hopes the awardees will continue to pioneer forward-looking research work, share more of their experiences, and help nurture a new generation of research leaders.
