Christian & Missionary Alliance Yuen Long Lutheran Secondary School held a "1,000-Person World Record Science Popularisation Challenge" on Monday (28 September). More than 1,000 teachers, students and parents from the whole school, under the guidance of Professor Guo Yanchuan, Chief Scientist of the Chinese Society for Imaging Science and Technology, and Professor Shao Mingfei of Zhongke Runde Biotechnology, participated in a science popularisation lecture and simultaneously conducted hands-on experiments in the hall and classrooms, using collagen to prepare nanoscale bioactive fibre materials. After strict on-site verification by a certification officer from the World Record Association, this 1,000-person collective production challenge successfully set a new world record — "Most people simultaneously using Chinese Academy of Sciences biotechnology raw materials to make science popularisation products."

🏛️ Strong Support from Political and Academic Sectors, Jointly Promoting Youth Innovation and Technology Education
The event received strong support from the political, academic, educational and business sectors. Multiple Legislative Council Members, District Council Members, research scholars, principals and chamber of commerce leaders attended as officiating guests and witnesses, demonstrating the cohesion of all sectors in jointly promoting youth innovation and technology education. Professor Guo Yanchuan said: "What students are holding in their hands today is precisely the Chinese Academy of Sciences' research raw materials. Many students feel that cutting-edge research is far removed from daily life, but at this very moment, 1,000 students are simultaneously doing hands-on work, turning research raw materials into finished products. This process is a true microcosm of research moving from technological breakthrough to industrialisation and into daily life." Legislative Council Member Leung Tsz-wing said frankly: "Today's activity precisely echoes the science and technology innovation development plan in our country's '15th Five-Year Plan,' as well as the policy direction of Hong Kong's STEAM education; from Hong Kong's perspective, it tells the world the story of Chinese science and technology, the story of industry, and the story of raw material innovation." Professor Zhang Zesong, Associate Vice-President of City University of Hong Kong and Chairman of the Hong Kong Science and Technology Innovation Education Alliance, encouraged students to step outside the exam-oriented framework: "Hands-on experience is more solid than memorising textbooks; in the wave of AI, we must even more protect humanity's unique curiosity and way of thinking." Principal Wan Ho-yin of Yuen Long Lutheran Secondary School also said: "The record certificate is only the starting point. More importantly, it allows students to come into close contact with top scientists and understand that technological research and development is not a distant textbook term, but an achievement they can touch with their own hands and produce themselves."

🧬 Unlocking the Mysteries of Collagen, Experiencing Frontier Research Beyond Textbooks
Before the science popularisation lecture and experiments began, Mr. Ho Chun-yin, Science Coordinator, and Form 6 student To Yee-sai took the lead in a live broadcast to the whole school, explaining related biotechnology concepts and the country's leading technological development in accessible terms. In the science popularisation lecture, Professor Shao Mingfei spoke on the topic "Collagen for Biomedical Applications," analysing its triple helix structure from an evolutionary perspective, and pointing out that this material's microscopic tensile strength is even superior to steel reinforcement, combining physical scaffolding and tissue repair functions. In the Q&A session, Professor Shao also answered in detail Form 6 student To Yee-sai's question about "the biggest challenge in turning laboratory research outcomes into everyday products," fully demonstrating their shared enthusiasm for science popularisation exchange. Student To remarked: "This not only deepened my understanding of and passion for biotechnology, but also gave me a profound appreciation of the effort and perseverance behind the country's outstanding research achievements."

🧪 1,000 People Simultaneously Conduct Hands-On Experiments, Witnessing Nanofibre Formation
Subsequently, under Professor Shao Mingfei's guidance and with the shuttling collaboration of 5A science class students, more than 1,000 people in the venue worked together to conduct the experiment, mixing liquid and powder raw materials into an essence spray, spraying it onto the Chinese Academy of Sciences' patented electrospinning collagen membrane, and witnessing the wondrous process of the membrane dissolving instantly and changing structure. 5A students Chan Yan-yuet and Yip Pui-ching, who assisted their juniors in completing the experiment, said frankly: "Being able to witness nanofibre formation with our own eyes, turning microscopic science into something concrete, and leading our juniors in doing experiments, inspiring innovative thinking, has truly been a rewarding experience." This event combined cutting-edge technology with hands-on practice, leading frontier biomaterials beyond the laboratory and thesis framework, and creating a practical paradigm for secondary school STEAM education that is both deep and broad. It is hoped that in future, Mainland-Hong Kong innovation and technology cooperation will be further expanded, closely following the pulse of the country's "15th Five-Year Plan" development, and nurturing more future innovation and technology pillars for Hong Kong who are committed to both the nation and their home, and brave in exploration.
