There is new progress in the long-planned rebuild of the traditional elite school St. Joseph's Primary School at its original site. Principal Lam Mei-ki sent a letter to parents yesterday confirming that the school has received notice from the government that the project has passed internal approval. The school will subsequently finalise the new campus design, tender the works, and submit a funding application to the Legislative Council. If the procedures go smoothly, construction could officially begin as early as late next year.

In the letter to parents, Lam Mei-ki described the new progress as a milestone for the campus rebuild project, but said the task remains formidable, and the school will work closely with consultants to complete the necessary work as soon as possible. She also mentioned that the new campus is expected to take several years to complete, and promised to continue updating alumni, donors and other stakeholders on the project's progress. She is confident the rebuild will significantly enhance students' learning environment, and thanked all parties for their support and cooperation.

🏗️ Project Launched in 2023; Internal Approval Not Granted in the Past Two Years
The St. Joseph's Primary School rebuild project was launched as early as April 2023, originally planned to start construction in 2025 and be completed in 2028. However, in the past two years, the school was notified by the government that it had not passed internal approval, meaning the project could not be submitted to the Legislative Council for funding. In the letter to parents, Lam Mei-ki said the school has commissioned professional consultants to carry out detailed design of the new campus, which is progressing smoothly, and the detailed design work is about to be finalised.

🏟️ New Campus to Have 30 Classrooms; New Rooftop Football Pitch
According to school information, the campus will be rebuilt on the original site as a new 9-storey building comprising 7 above-ground floors and 2 basement levels, with a buildable floor area of 141,174 square feet. It will have 30 classrooms, a visual arts room and other facilities, and will also add a rooftop football pitch, outdoor learning spaces, and more. The entire project costs over HK$400 million. The government will subsidise the construction and basic facilities costs, while the school has also launched a fundraising campaign with a target of HK$50 million to add and maintain facilities above standard campus provisions. According to the original plan, during the rebuild, St. Joseph's Primary School will temporarily relocate to the former Lung Cheung Government Secondary School campus in Wong Tai Sin until the new campus is completed.
