A website of The Chinese University of Hong Kong (CUHK) is suspected of having been hacked. Visitors browsing the website of CUHK's School of Journalism and Communication (com.cuhk.edu.hk) were redirected to a gambling website with a URL containing CUHK's English abbreviation "CUHK." The Office of the Privacy Commissioner for Personal Data has received related enquiries or complaints and will proactively contact the organisation concerned to understand the situation.

The website of CUHK's School of Journalism and Communication is suspected of having been hacked, with some visitors reportedly redirected to a gambling website at "cuhk.tech" when browsing the site. The suspected fake CUHK gambling website had its domain registered at around 1 p.m. on the 14th and was connected to CloudFlare within two minutes. A public scanning service website showed that the earliest appearance of the related attack on Urlscan was at around 2 a.m. today. After further checks of other websites of CUHK and the School of Journalism and Communication, no obvious abnormalities had been found so far. Teachers and students who might be affected were urged to raise their cybersecurity awareness. The website of CUHK's School of Journalism and Communication remains inaccessible.

CUHK said the School of Journalism and Communication discovered this morning that its website had been redirected to a gambling webpage. It immediately suspended the website's operation and reported the matter to the university's Information Technology Services Centre for follow-up on security matters. The website is being repaired and the incident is under investigation, and no leakage of personal sensitive data has been found at this stage.

The Office of the Privacy Commissioner for Personal Data said it had not received a data breach notification from the organisation concerned, nor had it received any related enquiries or complaints so far. It will proactively make contact to understand the situation and urged those who suspect they may be affected to contact the organisation concerned or enquire with the Privacy Commissioner's Office.
