Following the Shenzhen Future Technology School jointly established with Tianjin University, The Hong Kong Polytechnic University (PolyU) and Harbin Institute of Technology (HIT) have established the "Harbin Institute of Technology and The Hong Kong Polytechnic University Shenzhen International School of Design" in Shenzhen. Master's degree programmes will be offered starting from the 2027/28 academic year, covering three areas: Design, Intelligent Science and Technology, and Urban and Rural Planning, with 150 full-time master's students to be admitted in the first year. The two universities have simultaneously launched the "Future Design Joint Research Centre," which will focus on advancing future housing and smart cities, as well as integrating design, culture and arts, and digital media technology.
🏫 Combining the Strengths of Both Universities in Design Education and Engineering Technology
The Shenzhen International School of Design will combine the strengths of both universities in design education and engineering technology. Master's programmes will be offered at HIT's Shenzhen campus starting from the 2027/28 academic year. The programmes last three years, with 150 full-time master's students planned for the first year. The programmes will be jointly coordinated and taught by both universities. Students who complete the programmes and meet graduation requirements will receive degree certificates issued separately by both universities .
🔬 "Future Design Joint Research Centre" Launched Simultaneously
The two universities have simultaneously launched the "Future Design Joint Research Centre," focusing on interdisciplinary research into the integrated development of design, technology and society. It will advance three major research directions: future housing and smart cities, system integration design, and culture, arts and digital media technology, with the goal of promoting innovative research, knowledge transfer and the commercialisation of research outcomes. To enhance the quality of the school, the two universities have established a joint management committee, which held its first meeting on issues including the school's governance structure, the composition of the academic committee, and postgraduate admissions .
💬 Presidents: Strengthening the Cross-Fertilisation of Engineering Technology and Design Innovation
PolyU President Teng Jin-guang believes the two platforms will help drive innovation and industry-academia-research collaboration, serving as a demonstration for Greater Bay Area development. HIT President Han Jiecai hopes to leverage the strengths of both universities to strengthen the cross-fertilisation of engineering technology and design innovation, and to cultivate composite talent with design thinking. It is reported that the Shenzhen International School of Design was approved for establishment by the Ministry of Education earlier this year. The school's predecessor was a project jointly established by HIT and Zurich University of the Arts in Switzerland in 2015, but it ceased operation due to factors including geopolitics, differences in academic systems, operational resources and excessive risk, after which PolyU took over the partnership .
