Wah Yan College, Hong Kong (WYHK), the alma mater of former Chief Executive Donald Tsang, Secretary for Justice Paul Lam, and famous artistes Kevin Cheng and Hacken Lee, will hold its 2027/28 Form 1 Admission Talk on 14 November 2026. Online registration runs from now until 26 October 2026. Parents intending to apply for their sons should take note of the latest changes in places, admission scoring criteria, interview tips and key admission factors.

📈 Discretionary Places Increased to 54; Sports and Music Scholarships Offer Fee Exemption
As the school continues to develop, WYHK's total Form 1 places have increased from 144 in the past to 180 for the 2026/27 academic year and beyond. The highly sought-after "Discretionary Places" quota has correspondingly increased from 43 to 54, providing more opportunities for outstanding students. In addition, the school specially offers Sports/Music Scholars; selected students may be exempted from paying the special fee (approved as needed and renewed annually) for the 2027/28 academic year, to recognise and encourage students with outstanding performance in sports and music. Referring to previous years, the annual special fee per student totals HK$1,500 + $450. The application period for 2027-28 Form 1 Discretionary Places is from 4 to 18 January 2027. Parents may submit applications through the "Secondary School Places Allocation Electronic Platform" or by paper form directly to no more than two participating secondary schools.

📊 Discretionary Places Scoring Criteria: Interview Performance Accounts for 50%
Ahead of the talk, the school announced the admission scoring criteria and weightings for "Discretionary Places" as follows:

  • Interview performance: 50%

  • Academic performance and whole-person development: 30%

  • Position on the Education Bureau's Rank Order List for Discretionary Places: 20%

Interview performance accounts for as much as 50% of the overall score. Parents should note the following interview details:

  • Assessment language: Both Chinese and English

  • Assessment format: Individual and group interviews

  • Interview duration: Approximately 10 minutes in total

Previously admitted Primary 6 boys shared interview questions, including English questions such as "What activities do you usually do?" and "What is your favourite movie?", and Chinese questions such as "What activities did you participate in during primary school?"

💬 Principal Reveals Key Admission Factors: Values Students' Genuine Passion
Many parents have the misconception that the more interest classes and awards during primary school, the better the chances of admission. Principal Chan Wai-lun, who has served for 7 years, previously revealed that the school does not wish to see students with packed schedules; the most important thing is to find one's own interests and passion. Principal Chan pointed out that during interviews, teachers can easily tell whether a student truly loves the interest or whether it was simply arranged by parents. Principal Chan also stressed that WYHK's educational core is "overcoming oneself," encouraging students to pursue self-breakthrough rather than blindly comparing with others. The school offers over 40 student-led extracurricular activities and has established an AI working group to promote assisted learning. It also focuses on students' well-being, arranging relaxing activities such as an ice cream truck visiting the school before exams, embodying the "whole-person care" educational approach.

🎓 Generations of Alumni Give Back; Over HK$1 Million in Overseas Study Scholarships**
WYHK emphasises the heritage and care among senior and junior schoolmates, with alumni contributing money and effort to support juniors. The school has diverse scholarships and bursaries donated by alumni and benefactors (including the "John Lo Education Scholarship" donated by Tencent Group CFO and 1985 graduate John Lo), providing up to HK$1 million or more annually to support students with financial difficulties pursuing overseas studies. The school also achieves outstanding results in academics and whole-person development. In the 2026 DSE results, WYHK produced a top scorer, Cheng Tsz-yuen, who achieved 5 in 6 subjects. Cheng overcame severe congenital visual impairment through hard study to reach the top, aspiring to study the double degree programme in Politics and Law at the University of Hong Kong and speak up for disadvantaged groups. WYHK has also previously nurtured super top scorer Hung Chun, who achieved 5** in 7 subjects and entered HKU's Faculty of Medicine, proving the school cultivates students with both perseverance and outstanding academic achievements.
