The Hong Kong University of Science and Technology (HKUST), which is preparing to establish Hong Kong's third medical school, has recruited talent for its new medical school. The university recently updated its online information, disclosing that Leung Yu-hung, Associate Dean (Human Capital) of the HKU Faculty of Medicine, had earlier "switched over" to HKUST to serve as Senior Associate Dean of the new medical school. Elaine Holmes, former Head of the Department of Computational and Systems Medicine at Imperial College London, described being attracted to join by HKUST's "vitality and ambition."

👨‍⚕️ Leung Yu-hung Appointed Senior Associate Dean; Long-Time Leukaemia Researcher
According to HKUST's website, apart from Lee Chun-sang, who became Founding Dean in June, a number of full-time scholars have officially taken up posts at the new medical school. The most notable is Leung Yu-hung, former Associate Dean (Human Capital) of the HKU Faculty of Medicine and Chair Professor of Haematology in the Department of Medicine, who has moved to HKUST as Senior Associate Dean of the Medical School and Clinical Chair Professor. Leung Yu-hung has long researched acute myeloid leukaemia. In May, he met the media at the HKU Faculty of Medicine to explain his team's research results on developing a novel combination therapy that substantially reduces the relapse rate of leukaemia. An overseas scholar who recently attended an academic event at the HKUST Medical School posted online, showing Leung Yu-hung and other newly appointed scholars and staff accompanying Lee Chun-sang in receiving visiting guests.

🌍 Overseas Scholars Join, Praising HKUST for Enabling Natural Convergence of Disciplines
Among those joining the HKUST Medical School are overseas scholars, including Elaine Holmes, former Professor of Biochemistry at Imperial College London, Professor of Molecular Phenomics at Murdoch University in Australia, and Director of the Centre for Computational and Systems Medicine. In an online post, she mentioned joining HKUST as a professor in early July, saying that HKUST is highly aligned with her interdisciplinary research development path, including systems medicine, microbiome research, artificial intelligence (AI) and precision health. She described HKUST as one of the few "ideal places where disciplines can naturally converge," "where one can both realise grand scientific ambitions and translate research outcomes into practical health applications; the vitality and ambition shown by HKUST deeply infected me." Jeremy K. Nicholson, former Vice-Chancellor responsible for health sciences research at Murdoch University and Executive Director of the Australian National Phenome Centre, has also joined as Chair Professor at the HKUST Medical School.

👥 Ip Yuk-yu: 7 Clinical Professors in Post; About 30 Have Signed Letters of Intent
The team also includes a number of HKUST scholars, including President Ip Yuk-yu. In April, she revealed that the new medical school had 7 clinical professors in post, with about 30 more having signed letters of intent to join, from places including the United States, Europe, Australia and Singapore. She reiterated at the time that the university would not "poach" from the medical schools of HKU and CUHK, stressing that medical schools would work together to build Hong Kong into an international healthcare innovation hub rather than compete.
